The public system: first steps

  1. A tax number (AFM) from the tax authority. More in the tax guide.
  2. A social security number (AMKA). Some foreigners first get a temporary number (PAAYPA).
  3. Insurance with e-EFKA, through your job or as self-employed. Medical services for insured people are provided through EOPYY.
  4. Register with a personal physician on gov.gr. They are your first point of contact with the public health system.
