Work and careers in Portugal

Who can work in Portugal, where to look for jobs, when you need your degree recognised, and how to register as self-employed.

✓ Checked against the sources: October 2026

⚠️ This isn't legal advice. Visa requirements change, so always check the official source or a lawyer.

First: are you allowed to work

EU citizens (including Israelis with an EU passport) can work in Portugal without a visa. If you stay more than three months, you ask the town hall in your area for a registration certificate, within 30 days after those three months.

Without an EU passport you need a residence visa that fits your purpose: employment, self-employment, highly qualified work, or remote work for an entity outside Portugal (the "digital nomad" visa). The requirements for each visa are on the Portuguese Foreign Ministry's visa site.

Where to look

  • IEFP: Portugal's public employment service.
  • EURES: the EU's job portal.
  • Hebrew is an advantage: search LinkedIn for jobs with "Hebrew" in Lisbon and Porto.
